To that end, we have developed a method to deliver wet spent grain from beer production directly for food production, turning it from a waste product to a great and nutritious food supplement.
Our product, Biograin, is not created by climate-damaging and energy-intensive drying processes.
Biograin is the first to have developed and patented a spent grain product for the food industry.
Plant proteins and fibres
Starch free!
Eating spent grain gives you a number of nutritional and physiological benefits, as it has a high dietary fibre content that promotes our gastrointestinal function and a high content of oils and minerals that are important for the body's structure.
Spent grain has a high protein content which can replace a significant part of our animal protein intake. As a bonus, it is starch-free.
For every 100 litres of beer, breweries are left with about 20 kg of spent grain
One of the by-products from brewing beer, spent grain is the remains of malting barley, after breweries have extracted the desired amount of starch for production. The spent grain is rich in fibres and minerals.
It is estimated that breweries worldwide dispose of more than 40 million tonnes per year, in different ways from brewery to brewery and from country to country.
In many parts of the world it is discarded as waste, but in some countries like Denmark, most of it is typically used for animal feed.
Spent grain is one of the food industry's most lucrative by-products.
Sustainable and low energy consumption,
our contribution to the UN's world goals
Read more about our contributionsTo ensure that we move in the right direction and deliver on our vision of contributing to the green transition and better global health, we have identified four of the UN's 17 World Goals for Sustainable Development.
We believe that our efforts can contribute to a better world, and have integrated them into our strategy.
